What is the problem with the NFL and the NFLPA?

The NFL is in danger of a lockout, and I would be really disappointed if there was no season next year. What are the items/issues on the table? And why are they taking so long to get a deal? Is it just the natural order of things for them to be bitterly opposed to each other, or are there legitimate reasons they haven't said "Let's play some football!"?
