I have a question about the movie True Grit.?

I just watched it the night before last and I loved it but I have one question. At the end of the movie Mattie Ross went to that traveling western show to see Rooster Cogburn. She spoke to an old man with white hair. Next to him sat another old guy who she called "trash". Who was that guy?
