Death in service benefit?

My Dad died in december he had death in service benefit. He had put his then wife as beneficiary in 2002 and they divorced bitterly in 2003. Dad did not update the paperwork, he was rubbish at admin!! Will the trustees use their common sense as my Dad would turn in his grave if they gave it to her, he hated her!!
